In the early 2000s two anchors at Christiana Mall in Newark, Delaware, went dark. For a while, it looked as though Christiana would go the way of so many dying regional malls, falling into obsolescence and disuse. When Nordstrom agreed to fill one of the anchor positionsĀ the mall owner, General Growth Properties, launched a large-scale redevelopment of the entire mall. The redevelopment included new entrances, new food court and plaza; new outward facing retail and streetscape covering the blank exterior walls of the old mall; and re-positioning the dated 1980s mall concourse with a swank, hospitality based interior befitting the new carriageĀ trade retail leading to Nordstrom.
